The character: Tyga buries his name to bring $tarface to life
The gesture is rare in US rap. For this project, Tyga does not just change his sound: he puts away his stage name and takes on a new identity, $tarface. A deliberate nod to the most cult gangster movie of the 80s.
For a few weeks now, the character has already released two singles. The common thread: jheri curl, colorful shirts, synthetic singing instead of verses. And the audience follows — almost unanimous comments under the clips, counters climbing to several million views. The double has come to life.
From 808s to synths: the big leap into the 80s
No more trap productions. $tarface bets on warm analog synths, soul melodies and vintage production designed to sound authentically eighties. On the 10 tracks, the voice takes the lead: more singing than rapping.
The record includes the singles already released, "Affection" and "GAVE U RACKS", plus a collaboration with a wave companion: Fenix Flexin. Their joint track, "Lavi$h", extends the strong comeback of the 80s sound that the Shoreline Mafia rapper had relaunched with his hit "Rubberz".

Why this turn now?
The idea was born during the filming of Baby, You're a Star, a movie in which the New Yorker lands one of the lead roles. The big screen fed the character, and the character ended up demanding his own music.
