Tomb Raider: the new Lara Croft will blow your mind

Angelina Jolie made her iconic. Alicia Vikander made her human. In 2027, Sophie Turner takes up Lara Croft’s twin pistols — and this time, it’s no longer a movie, it’s a Prime Video series. Behind the camera: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the pen behind Fleabag. Filming started in January 2026. Here’s everything you can expect.

Sophie Turner as Lara Croft: the first official look revealed by Prime Video in January 2026.

The series in brief

  • Platform: Prime Video (Amazon MGM Studios), exclusive
  • Release: targeted for 2027, no exact date confirmed yet
  • Creator: Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), also screenwriter and producer
  • Lead role: Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Lara Croft
  • Filming: started in January 2026, between England and Spain

Sophie Turner takes up Lara Croft’s twin pistols

The role is monumental. Before her, two stars tackled it on the big screen: Angelina Jolie, then Alicia Vikander. In September 2025, Prime Video decided: it will be Sophie Turner, the Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones, who will wear the tank top and holsters of the most famous video game adventurer.

A quick reminder for those who only know Lara Croft by name: she is an archaeologist-adventurer born in 1996 in the Tomb Raider games, raiding forgotten temples and booby-trapped tombs in search of treasures and mysteries. A 90s pop icon, on par with Indiana Jones.

Turner states clearly: she wants a strong and credible Lara, a female role model who impresses — definitely not just a "sex bomb." And she’s going all out physically to embody her.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge injects her venom into a 90s icon

This might be the real surprise of the project. At the helm is Phoebe Waller-Bridge: the creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve, Emmy-winning, known for her sharp English humor.

She doesn’t just produce. She writes, supervises, and stamps her mark — supported by co-showrunner Chad Hodge, while Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) directs the first episodes. Waller-Bridge says she’s an absolute fan of the franchise and aims for a Lara who is funny, brave, and a bit outrageous.

Translation: expect an adventurer less polished than in the films, with sharp lines and a gang of scoundrels tailor-made. The Fleabag spirit grafted onto an action blockbuster: a bold bet.

Did you know?

In March 2026, filming was paused two weeks after a minor back injury to Sophie Turner during an action scene. Amazon called it a simple precaution, the crew was paid during the break, and filming resumed shortly after. Proof she didn’t choose the easy stunt double to play Lara.

A cast that packs a punch

Around Turner, Prime Video lined up heavy hitters. Sigourney Weaver — yes, Ripley from Alien — plays Evelyn Wallis, a businesswoman as powerful as she is mysterious, determined to exploit Lara’s talents. Opposite her, Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The White Lotus) plays Atlas DeMornay, the heroine’s uncle.

The series also nods to longtime fans. It features iconic faces from the games: Zip, Lara’s geeky right-hand man, and Winston, the loyal Croft family butler. The rest of the cast mixes known figures and new characters — those famous scoundrels imagined by Waller-Bridge to sow chaos.

The first look not to miss

No trailer yet on the horizon: filming has just resumed. The only official visual is this first look revealed by Amazon in January 2026, where Sophie Turner appears in the iconic outfit. Discover it in detail here: Sophie Turner’s first look as Lara Croft. A teaser, while waiting for the first moving images.

A series, but above all a universe

Amazon is not thinking of a simple adaptation. The studio is building a connected Tomb Raider universe, where the TV series dialogues with future games developed by Crystal Dynamics, the historic guardian of the franchise for over fifteen years.

The ambition is clear: to make Lara Croft a transmedia brand, able to live on screen as well as in hand. For now, no detailed synopsis has leaked — just the promise of an adventurer on the trail of treasures and puzzles, somewhere between England and the Spanish settings of Girona and Almería.

Adventurer’s look

Lara Croft’s silhouette is pure functionality: materials that take a beating, pockets that serve a purpose, a look that moves with the body. Nothing superfluous, all for action. At Project X Paris, we know this logic by heart — cargo, clothing designed for movement, it’s our playground. The street and adventure speak the same language.

Why you need to keep an eye on her

A 90s icon awakened, the sharpest pen in British TV, a five-star cast and a universe designed to last. Tomb Raider Prime Video version ticks all the boxes for the 2027 pop culture event.

Filming is underway, set photos leak drip by drip — motorcycles, stunts, forests. Nothing is yet dated in black and white, but the machine is rolling. Lock the name somewhere: you’ll hear about it.

Lara returns, in a series

Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing, Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs supporting: Prime Video is not doing things halfway. See you in 2027 to find out if the most famous video game adventurer reclaims her throne on screen.
