Somewhere between two holographic billboards, a neon sign crackles. Six years after a launch that short-circuited, the most electric city in gaming is reconnecting with Hollywood. On October 8, 2026, Paramount and CD Projekt powered up the Cyberpunk 2077 film, with no V in the credits.
Studio: Paramount Pictures, co-produced with CD Projekt Red
Producer: Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe)
Announcement: October 8, 2026
The game: more than 40 million copies sold (July 2026)
⏳ Release: no date announced
Paramount takes the helm: Night City goes into overdrive
The signal went out on October 8, 2026. Deadline and Variety report that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film. CD Projekt Red isn't handing over the keys just yet: the Polish studio is co-producing.
Behind the production, a heavyweight name: Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The man behind Transformers and G.I. Joe knows how to turn a franchise into a box-office machine. His arrival sends a clear message: Night City is aiming for the big screen, not just a spot in the catalog.
Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski welcomes a partner who shares the studio's “creative ambitions” for the franchise. Translation: the connection is strong, and it's running at full power.
The first connection fizzled out
Back in October 2023, CD Projekt had already announced a live-action project with Anonymous Content, the company behind True Detective. Whether it would be a film or a series was still undecided. The deal expired, and that exit opened the door for Paramount.
Why is CD Projekt refusing to tell V's story?
On October 16, Nowakowski put an end to speculation in an interview with the Polish news agency PAP Biznes. No adaptation of the game. A new story, set in the same world.
"We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won't be a one-to-one adaptation of the game's story."
Michał Nowakowski, CD Projekt co-CEO, to PAP Biznes (October 2026)
It's a smart move. V isn't a character, but an avatar shaped by each player: their face, their choices, their ending. Locking V into a single actor would unplug millions of versions all at once.
The real lead is Night City. Its gangs, corpos, implants, and neon lights that never go out. A film that roams its alleyways with new faces has everything to gain and nothing to betray.
From 2020 short circuit to full voltage in 2026
Back to December 2020. The game launches riddled with bugs on older-generation consoles, to the point that Sony pulls it from the PlayStation Store. For many, the franchise has blown its fuses.
The studio reconnects the wires one by one. In September 2022, the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners lands on Netflix and boosts game sales. A year later, the Phantom Liberty expansion completes the power-up.
The numbers speak for themselves: more than 40 million copies sold as of July 3, 2026, and 15 million for Phantom Liberty, according to the studio's half-year report. Add to that the groundwork laid by The Last of Us and Fallout as TV series. Hollywood no longer sees video games as a risky bet, but as a power outlet.
Edgerunners 2: the recharge arrives on October 20
Netflix launches Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on October 20, 2026. Ten episodes from Studio Trigger, directed by Kai Ikarashi, with a standalone story led by D and Weak Kingsley. The same formula as the film: Night City as the backdrop, new faces in the spotlight. Save the date—the teaser closes with a promise: Night City will burn again.

Casting, director, release date: the screen is still dark
Let's be clear: at this stage, no director, no actors, no release date. The film is still in the very early stages of development.
The fan base is getting fired up anyway. The name of Keanu Reeves, aka Johnny Silverhand in the game, keeps coming up, with no official connection to the film. Kyle Gallner (Smile) has already publicly offered to play V: the project is attracting attention before it even exists.
Our prediction is clear: this film will be judged by its city, not its hero. If Paramount captures the texture of Night City, the grime beneath the neon, the augmented street culture, it's got a franchise on its hands.
Night City on full power
Short-circuited in 2020, reconnected by an anime, the franchise is now plugged into Hollywood's network. The power is back on; all that's left is to light up the screen: the next chapter is already being written.
