One Piece Fest: 500,000 fans for 7,000 spots, and it disappoints

Inglewood, late August. The sun beats down, the asphalt smokes. Seven thousand privileged fans hold up their tickets and set off to explore nineteen arcs like a treasure hunt. The first ONE PIECE Fest outside Japan has anchored in Los Angeles. Verdict upon opening the chest.

The Cosm Los Angeles flagship venue of the first ONE PIECE Fest, August 25 and 26, 2026.

The event in brief

  • Dates: August 25 & 26, 2026, with a VIP preview by invitation on the 24th
  • Location: Cosm Los Angeles, Inglewood (Hollywood Park)
  • Attendance: nearly 7,000 fans, 4 full sessions of 1,750 spots
  • Lottery: nearly 500,000 entries to win a ticket
  • Concept: 19 arcs to explore freely, from East Blue to Elbaph

Seven thousand chosen: the loot 500,000 fans coveted

The number sets the scene better than any slogan. Nearly 500,000 entries rushed the lottery for only 7,000 spots. An entry ticket turned rare treasure, handed out sparingly over four sessions.

Toei Animation had big plans. The first ONE PIECE Fest ever held outside Japan, a concept tailor-made for the Cosm. The brand was testing a simple hypothesis: does the American One Piece fanbase really weigh in?

The answer came even before the doors opened. Complete sell-out, lines winding under 40°C heat, straw hats as far as the eye can see. The course was right. The question remained if the island was worth the journey.

From Going Merry to the Dome: inside the Elbaph Experience

At the center of the route, the centerpiece. A giant LED dome that envelops the viewer 360 degrees, a huge screen, monstrous resolution. On paper, the dream treasure map.

The sequence takes the audience aboard the Going Merry, crosses Owl’s library, then raises the chained giant Loki facing Luffy. At the opening, a mosaic displays all the anime episodes broadcast simultaneously. Archivist vertigo, tribute to a thousand episodes of navigation.

Around, the stamp rally does its job. Map in hand, you stamp nineteen reconstructed arcs: GEAR 5, Sabaody Lounge, Usopp’s shooting stand, Buggy’s carnival, Shanks’ hat to wear. For the collector, the real pleasure of the hunt.

A must-see: the ONE PIECE Fest immersion by Toei Animation.

Did you know?

The ONE PIECE Fest opened just two days after the ONE PIECE DAY'26 in Japan, on August 23. The big film announcements stayed in Tokyo. Los Angeles inherited the immersion, not the revelations.

Vibe check: the atmosphere of the ONE PIECE Fest filmed live at the Cosm Los Angeles.

Behind the scenes: when the chest rings half empty

After the hype wave, the landing left a bitter taste for part of the crew. On Reddit and Instagram, the same words come up repeatedly: "cash grab", "not worth it", better mall pop-up.

The complaints are concrete. One hour wait in the blazing sun for the morning session, then more lines inside. The dome show, hoped to be the highlight, judged short and without exclusive episodes. The ONE PIECE Bazaar merch exclusives vanished in about thirty minutes.

Forbes noted it from the first session: stands already dry, security checks dragging, rising frustration online. Many summed up their visit as 1h30 of real content drowned in waiting. The chest was there. The loot, less plentiful than promised.

What saved the crossing

One man put the wind back in the sails: Hiroshi Kitadani, voice of cult openings, launched We Are! and OVER THE TOP live. Fifteen minutes, but the emotional peak of the weekend. Beside him, Ian Sinclair, English voice of Brook, on stage both days. And everywhere, a tide of cosplays reminding why we came.

The exact moment: a fan POV in the Fest aisles.

Why no bomb exploded in Inglewood?

Those expecting a shock teaser left empty-handed. No major announcements on the anime continuation, the Netflix live-action, or a new game. The silence was calculated.

The two films had already been revealed in Tokyo: One Piece Film God Valley targeted for 2027, One Piece Film Baad for 2029. Los Angeles only capitalized on them in the dome. The role sharing was clear: revelations in Japan, immersion in the US.

A course remains set for the future. The Mugiwara Store in Los Angeles opens this fall, and the live-action exhibition warmed up the crowd without revealing anything about season 3. First edition, ground scouted. The real map will be drawn next time.

THE TREASURE WILL WAIT

The chest opened half full, but the map is now drawn. Los Angeles proved the fanbase showed up. It’s up to Toei to load the loot to the crew’s level. The next crossing is already being written.
