Jujutsu Kaisen x Project X Paris, the sensational back-to-school collab
As mangas continue to invade global pop culture, Project X Paris could not miss the Jujutsu Kaisen phenomenon, the new generation manga that is a hit worldwide. We are therefore delighted to present our collaboration with THE new reference manga.
Jujutsu Kaisen, the new reference manga?
For several years now, mangas have successfully exported from Japan to conquer global pop culture. Now, each generation has had its "cult" manga title that marked its era. For the older ones, it was the Dragon Ball Z / Goldorak / Saint Seiya period. For the slightly younger, they witnessed the rise of phenomena like Naruto and then One Piece. And now, it’s the era of Jujutsu Kaisen! Although the work started being published in 2017/2018, it has already managed to establish itself in an increasingly crowded and competitive manga landscape. And in style: in barely 6 years, Jujutsu Kaisen has climbed into the top 30 best-selling mangas of all time, not counting the many pirates who have extensively consumed the work on "scan" sites.
The success of the saga is no accident. Its creator, Gege Akutami, had the good idea to contact production companies to launch the animated series very early, at the end of 2019. Nothing better than a good anime to make an already popular series even more famous. If we had to list the ingredients of Jujutsu Kaisen’s success, we would have to talk about the story, the plot. The premise is simple: human negative emotions generate the appearance of real Curses, in the form of demons, invisible to human eyes. But not all humans: some, like exorcists, manage to control their emotions and can therefore see the Curses, interact with them, and above all, protect the human world from these demons. It is in this universe that we follow the adventure of Yuji Itadori, a student with great strength, who accidentally comes across a very powerful relic, which they activate by mistake, releasing the most powerful Curse: Ryomen Sukuna. Attacked by many demons, Yuji decides to swallow the relic, which in a way makes him fuse with Sukuna. Somewhat by the force of events, the student ends up joining an exorcism school and decides to become one himself, to protect humanity by eliminating the curses.
This "cohabitation" between Yuji and Sukuna is what makes this adventure so interesting. Another element explaining the shonen’s success is the speed at which volumes are released. Despite the mangaka’s health problems, which caused two breaks in publication during 2021, 24 volumes have been published between late 2018 and the time of writing. Finally, the quality of the drawings is obviously a strong argument for Jujutsu Kaisen against the competition, which sometimes neglects the graphic aspect. The result of all this is over 80 million manga volumes sold worldwide, and the work even held the number one spot on the Oricon ranking of best-selling mangas in Japan from November 2020 to November 2021. As for the anime, it’s obviously a hit as well: the Crunchyroll platform, which broadcast the animated series at its release in France, recorded its best score ever in the country. Jujutsu Kaisen has thus become a true cultural phenomenon for an entire generation.
PXP x Jujutsu Kaisen: streetwear takes on manga!
A phenomenon that Project X Paris is determined to seize. After One Piece, it’s Jujutsu Kaisen’s turn to be adapted in the PXP style, through an unprecedented collaboration where our designers let their creativity run free. The capsule contains four pieces, and we’ll start by tackling the biggest piece directly: the hoodie. A sweatshirt whose design has been completely reworked, especially the Project X Paris logo, where the "O" is replaced by the emblem of the exorcism school where Yuji trains during his adventure. The manga’s name appears just above the brand name on the chest, and there are also writings on the back of the sleeves. A warm piece to face the cold days ahead while wearing the exorcists’ mark!
We stay with warmer pieces, with the Project X Paris x Jujutsu Kaisen crewneck sweatshirt. With a bolder design than the previous piece, because this time, Sukuna himself, the most powerful Curse, is embroidered on the chest of the sweatshirt. Again, the manga’s name appears smaller just below. With the little detail that kills, if you like subtle nods to the manga universe: the demon’s emblem is placed on the back of the sweatshirt at the collar. And if you’re not a fan of black, the sweatshirt will come in 8 different colors.
Finally, we’ll finish by talking about the two t-shirts, which are essential for a well-done streetwear outfit. With two very different models: the first is a bit more understated, with simply the large "Jujutsu Kaisen" logo followed by "Project X Paris". Logos in their stylized version: the emblem of the exorcism school appears in place of the "O", and the "X" has also been reworked for a very successful manga effect. The second piece is a bit more extravagant, since on the t-shirt, you have a stylized logo at the top of the chest in a small font, but above all, a large print representing Yuji and his teacher and mentor Satoru Gojo, the most powerful exorcist of the Tokyo school. Enough to be protected from the evil eye, and above all, enough to walk around in style while proudly affirming your belonging to the Jujutsu Kaisen family.
