Sacramento, T-0: why this weekend changes the history of action sports

The X Games celebrate their 31st anniversary. For three decades, the formula remained unchanged: a contest, solo riders, a ranking. Summer 2026 breaks this trajectory.

“MoonPay X Games Sacramento 2026 marks a decisive moment as we launch the X Games League,” says Jeremy Bloom, CEO of the X Games. “Sacramento is the starting point of a new era, where progression, storytelling, and team rivalries come together on a global stage.”

The X Games League now structures action sports into two annual seasons — a summer season (skateboard and BMX), a winter season (snowboard and ski). Sacramento is the first thruster. The circuit will then extend to New Orleans for the summer championship.

Did you know?

The X Games were founded by ESPN in 1995. Since their first edition, the competition has crowned legendary figures like Tony Hawk, Shaun White, and Travis Pastrana — before transforming, 31 years later, into a professional team league. A revolution that was coming.

Must watch: the official announcement of the launch of the MoonPay X Games League, Sacramento 2026.

From contest to league: the mechanics of a revolution

Four clubs. Four cities. A race for the summer championship. The X Games Clubs Los Angeles, New York, São Paulo, and Tokyo face off for the first time in a team format — a structural break for a universe that has always celebrated individual achievement.

Each club fields 10 riders: five men, five women, in skateboard and BMX. The first draft in X Games history took place on March 12, 2026. Chloe Covell was selected as pick number one — the first choice of a league that has just been born.

Points accumulated in Sacramento count towards the summer season ranking. The champion club will be crowned at the end of the season in New Orleans. At Project X Paris, we follow this collective shift in a highly individual sport closely — because it is precisely this energy that is reshaping urban scenes in 2026.

How does the XGL format work?

The XGL format combines individual competitions AND team scoring. Each rider scores points for their club in their disciplines. These points accumulate throughout the season — Sacramento and New Orleans for summer 2026. The club with the highest cumulative score wins the summer championship. An unprecedented format that forces each rider to think collectively without sacrificing personal progression.

Riders to watch: the trajectories that will decide everything

The Sacramento armada is historic. Nearly 100 invited riders, several records at stake, a generation of teenagers pushing the limits of the possible. Three storylines not to miss.

Nyjah Huston arrives with 26 X Games medals including 15 golds — the most decorated street skateboarder in history. Opposite him, Garrett Reynolds reigns over BMX with 16 golds and 24 medals in total, the richest record in the entire X Games universe. These two are not competing: they are extending their legend.

On the women’s side, the tension is at its peak. Arisa Trew, 16 years old, already has 8 golds — the record for all female athletes in summer X Games. Chloe Covell, also 16 and the number one pick of the first XGL draft, has chained 5 consecutive golds. Sacramento could rewrite these two trajectories.

The most explosive storyline: Logan Martin and Daniel Sandoval compete in four disciplines each. A feat never achieved in X Games history. The last rider to win three golds in a single X Games was Travis Pastrana in Los Angeles in 2006 — twenty years ago. The launch ramp is ready.

Every X Games pushes action sports further, but this one is different. With the league format and so many athletes competing in multiple events, the pressure is higher and the opportunities greater — so I’m coming focused, ready to land my best runs and go for gold. The level right now is insane.

— NYJAH HUSTON, Sacramento 2026

The rider’s drip

XGL is also an aesthetic. On the Sacramento ramps, riders defy gravity in oversized t-shirts, loose sweatshirts, and chunky sneakers — a uniform that is as much skate wardrobe as urban statement. The XGL era pushes this style even further: clubs, their colors, their visual identities now matter as much as the tricks. For us, this rider culture is part of the DNA of what we have been building from the start.

XGL IS IN ORBIT

Sacramento is only the first launch. Clubs accumulate their points, the season extends to New Orleans, and this countdown will not stop — action sports have just entered a new atmosphere.
