Eight years of journey: from YouTube to Netflix

It all started with a short film, Rescapé, in 2018. No studio behind it, no film producer. A Marseille rapper, a fixed idea: to tell his neighborhood himself, with his own images.

The story then grew with the rhythm of albums. Le vent tourne in 2019, Le sang appelle le sang in 2020, Avec le temps in 2021, Crépuscule – Aube in 2022. Four films broadcast on his YouTube channel, four stages of a navigation against the current of the industry.

The music held the helm all this time. The album Rescapé opened the discography in 2019. Avec le temps, which shares its title with the third film, climbed to the number one sales spot in France.

Netflix now picks up the first episodes and produces a final chapter conceived as an original. The deal is not a jackpot. In an interview with Wej, Soso Maness explains that he will not recover, in the short term, all he has invested since the launch. His goal is elsewhere: to reach the widest audience.

What does Rescapé really tell?

Soso Maness plays Sossam, a young man from the northern neighborhoods caught up in trafficking. Around him, friendship clashes with crime, then betrayal. Settling scores, prison, and loyalty form the constant swell of the series.

The anchor point is Font-Vert, the housing project where the rapper grew up. But Rescapé remains a fiction loosely inspired by his youth, not a documentary. Realism comes through the locations, the accent, the faces.

Around Soso, the cast includes Idriss Aounallah, Adel Fellous, Moussa Maaskri, Sonia Tahar, Mourad Boussatha, and Kader Belioux. A Marseille cast, for a story that could not have been filmed elsewhere.

Between Bronx and Rescapé, a Marseillais's answer

To understand this finale, you have to go back to autumn 2020. Netflix had just released Bronx, a crime thriller by Olivier Marchal set against the backdrop of Marseille gang wars. Soso Maness warned he probably wouldn’t finish it, then launched a provocation.

Six years later, the challenge is met, in his own way. No big budget at first: eight years of self-produced films, then the platform comes to pick up the project. The bottle thrown into the sea finally reached the shore.

The rapper sums it up himself on Instagram: "we will always answer with art". A phrase that sounds like the baseline of the whole project.

The one-hour finale: why tonight matters

The fifth episode is the only one designed from the start as a Netflix original. About one hour to close a saga born in 2018. The wait is worth it: the first four episodes have already climbed to 2nd place in the Netflix France top.
