The mask: a new trend straight from Asia

Coming straight from the Land of the Rising Sun, the sanitary mask is experiencing a real turning point. Now a fashion accessory in its own right, its original purpose was to protect against all kinds of contamination. Focus on this little piece of fabric that has become a phenomenon

Originally, the sanitary mask was intended to protect against urban pollution. Indeed, Japan sometimes experiences high pollution peaks.   

Given the high population density in Japan, especially in big cities and public transport, diseases are more likely to spread. With so many people in contact, many Japanese wear them. It was still mandatory after the Fukushima nuclear plant explosion to protect the nearby population from nuclear contamination risks.   

Mostly made from thin white fabric, it can also come in other colors and materials for fashion enthusiasts.   

Stars have adopted and transformed it into a hype accessory. You can see it on the Instagram feeds of many American stars: Asap Ferg, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, and Asap Rocky styled in their own way.

Recently, in the music video "Mask Off" by American rapper Future, the sultry Amber Rose wore a mask adorned with spikes.
