Here we go again. After a first season that had freaked out all the counters, highlighting rap as a major discipline in France today, the TV-crochet rap version, "New School", is back. And this year, it’s going to be a huge success. We’re telling you why.
The "New School" of French rap in the spotlight
It took some time before rap was finally considered a genre of major importance in France. Even when Franck Gastambide broke all the records with his "Validé" series, there were still some to say that it was "thanks to confinement", or "because people had nothing else to watch". A few years later, however, the observation is simple: rap dominates the music production industry. In terms of sales, listeners, productivity and even diversity, since we have seen many "subgenres" of rap emerge in recent years, making it even richer. This year, we even got the first award ceremony organized by and for the rap game, "Les Flammes". French rap is a must, and Netflix understands this. By adapting the American program "Rythm + Flow" with "Nouvelle École", they probably did not expect such a huge success.

But the French-speaking public was very much in demand for these kinds of programs. It is therefore with great curiosity and a real impatience that we will scrutinize the arrival of "New School" season 2. A very close arrival, since the beginning of the broadcast is scheduled for May 17, still on Netflix. The program has become a sure value for the streaming platform, and promises to attract even more people, after the audience success of season 1. With ingredients that are still the same: a jury of leading rap stars, composed of Niska, SCH and Shay, a competition that lasts over several events, which pits a dozen candidates, and above all, a huge cashprize for the winner, who will win 100,000 euros, if we stay on the same standards as the previous year. Enough to invest calmly for the rest of his career.

But it’s not just a classic crochet TV, where the winner takes all the light and the others fall into oblivion. Just look at how the artists who participated in season 1 have evolved. Of course, Fresh, the big winner, was able to surf the wave of his victory with two projects and singles that hit hard. But the other candidates also continue to shine, thanks to the advice provided by professionals in the field. We think in particular of BB Jacques who continued in his universe, and made very good scores at each release. Or to Ben PLG, yet not the candidate most put forward by the program, who convinced everyone with his trilogy «Réalité Rap Musique» and the project that followed. Beautiful examples of how such a show can boost you and send you to the top, even without winning.
"New School", the biggest French rap contest
It’s no coincidence that this kind of rap show is on a roll. It’s partly due to a real demand from the public. But also to the quality of the French pool when we talk about rappers and artists in general. A pool much wider than the only Île-de-France or the neighborhoods of Marseille. In France, it’s been kicking for several years. At Project X Paris, we had the proof this year, when we launched in partnership with Trace the competition "Your Project, Your Trace". Supported by huge influencers like Nasdas, or Kader Diaby (who also tried his luck at the Rap Contenders), the contest brought us several thousand applications, with freestyles coming from "anonymous" artists heavier than each other. The French pool for rap seems inexhaustible.

For season 2 of "Nouvelle Ecole", the production has put a lot in the choice of casting. In the jury, with Niska, Shay and SCH, obviously, but especially in the selection of candidates. There are 19 at the moment (but the program may contain some surprises!), and they all have a real rather personal artistic identity. Slkrack, Coelho, Dau, Yuz Boy, Nayara, Bayass, Arka, Elso, Lpee, Warend, Comme1Flocon, K2 Shab's, Yonn, Ash to the Eye, Josué, La Valentina, Redhat, Jeremiah et Vadek vont s'affronter pour tenter de gagner les 100K, et au vu du talent de chacun, It’s hard to say who will win in the end.

Beyond the 100,000 euros, it is above all the respect of the judges, who are all great artists, and the recognition of the public, that the artists come to seek. Because rappers, in the past, have always managed to release records, even when there was no money. But being validated by SCH, Niska or Shay is not for everyone. Having access to good advice from real professionals isn’t either. We can’t wait to see the competition start, in the purest hip hop spirit. And we are especially eager to know who will succeed Fresh la Peufra, who brilliantly won the first season of "New School". The bets are on!
