For those who don't know it yet, it all starts with a mysterious man called the Professor and his ingenious but risky plan. The famous Netflix series that won't let you catch your breath. Straight from Spain, this series has become the phenomenon everyone's talking about in just 4 years.

A remarkable appetizer

"La Casa de Papel" has established itself as the most popular series of the moment! Robbery, shoot-outs, unexpected twists and turns - that's the recipe for success. The plot, if you haven't already figured it out, begins with the adventure of 8 bank robbers whose aim is to walk away with their own banknotes.

Of course, the police won't let them. The beginning of this series is simple and intriguing. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that the professor can be credible with the theory he puts forward to his team.

Charismatic, authentic characters

The Professor's team keeps their identities secret, and to this end each of them is assigned the name of a city, to guarantee their anonymity. Tokyo, Berlin, Denver, Rio, Oslo, Helsinki, Rio Nairobi, as well as Marseille, Stolkom and Palermo, which Sofia will join in the course of their adventures. Each member has a specific skill required to develop the plan. A team with unsuspected potential and explosive character.

Over the course of the series, we get to know them and discover their motivation. The viewer can quickly become attached to these almost peaceful "thugs".

Director Alex Pina manages to make some of the opposing characters likable. Raquel Murious, in charge of negotiations with the robbers, and Angle, her deputy, both manage to earn a certain esteem in the eyes of the audience.

Symbol of rebellion

These "thugs" of all kinds don't attack the economy of the people, or of any one person in particular, and they make that very clear. This is a first for a robbery.

Criminals, outcasts, thieves, robbers, lunatics... despite all the titles we can give them, they show and denounce at the same time, that they are nonetheless "less" guilty than some bankers or managers.

"La Casa de Papel" carries a message of rebellion. Their masks, bearing the effigy of Salvador Dali (a famous Spanish painter), may bear some similarity to that of Anonymous.

"For me this mask means many things, but above all it means the spirit that embodies resistance," confides Alvaro Morte, the professor's actor, in the documentary episode on Netflix.

The mask also symbolizes the painter's madness, as well as his idea of breaking the rules, just like the teacher. Salva (the professor), who refers to the Indignés and their protest movement at the Puerta del Sol, confides that he "is the grandson of an Italian partisan". The show's anthem, "Bella Ciao", dates back to the Second World War. It was written by Italian revolutionaries fighting against German forces allied with the Italian fascist movement. The use of this song is highly symbolic. It shows the robbers' determination not to rob the people. In season 3, we see Berlin and the professor singing " Guantanamera "by Compay Segundo. It's a little reference to the Guantanamo prisons, notorious for their violence and unsavoury torture techniques, and of course their desire to do the opposite, without violence. In fact, their jumpsuits are reminiscent of prisoners' outfits. Red is the color of passion and revolution. Despite all their symbols, their objectives are hardly revolutionary. These heroes simply want to make the most of their millions and live the life of their dreams.
