What is an overshirt?
Called "shacket" or "overshirt" by our Anglo-Saxon friends, the overshirt is a wide shirt, much thicker than the traditional shirt, often made of wool or velvet. This garment sits between the shirt and the jacket, almost acting as a sweater. Worn over a turtleneck, sweatshirt or even a t-shirt, the men's overshirt is easy to wear and, above all, fashionable. While perfect for mid-season, it's also easy to wear in winter under a coat or parka.
Where did the overshirt come from? Its origins are a little hazy, but it is thought to have made its appearance in the 1930s, initially worn by the US Navy. It obviously has more of a practical function than an aesthetic one. Indeed, overshirts were manufactured in large quantities to dress servicemen leaving for the Korean War to combat the Korean winter. Nowadays, this item is used not only by the military, but has become a real trend-setter.
